A white suburban guy is probably not the person to be saying this, but I thought these words from Henry Louis Gates deserved repeating. I wouldn't mind being able to slap on ASBA on that motorist alongside with his radio on full blast.

Back from the wake or whatever it was for Barbara Santoro. It was held at the Chandler Funeral Home on the Concord Pike, and a cast of thousands participated. Well, hundreds, anyhow. Mag and I arrived about 7 p.m., having taken Eddie and Lindsay Scott to the Friday First-Stop meeting at Tower Hill School. It was Eddie's first meeting, and a good one. People went out of their way to make him feel welcome, and one guy (Tony) actually took his own anniversary coin froom his pocket and gave it to Eddie.

Barbara could not have wanted the kind of ugly mob scene that took place at Chandler's. She was a woman of considerable elgance, and this was a coarse and unatractive event.
